Leaky gut is a gastrointestinal condition in the intestines and digestive tract also known as “intestinal hyperpermeability.” When you are suffering from this condition, your digestive system is unable to gain vital nutrition from your food.

This means that there is dysfunction of the gastrointestinal system, often causing pain and discomfort and potentially leading to other serious conditions. The symptoms of leaky gut include:

  • Food sensitivity
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Malabsorption of nutrients
  • Bloating
  • Allergies
  • Migraines

Failing to treat poor gut health may lead to other more serious health concerns such as depression, osteoporosis, infertility, skin disorders, joint pain, autoimmune conditions, and heart disease, just to name a few.

Western food and diet, as well as a lack of nutrition, can disrupt the balance in the gut and compromise a healthy intestinal barrier. The intestinal lining can be damaged by many factors such as diet and other inflammatory substances including;

  • Overuse of medication
  • Processed foods
  • Gluten & grains
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Stress
  • Smoking

Wearing down the villi inhibits the body’s ability to gain nutrition from healthy food and filter large particles and bacteria which can then pass through the gut into the bloodstream.

Leaky gut syndrome can be treated in a number of ways. Diet and lifestyle changes are the two most important factors to consider for treating leaky gut syndrome and making the gut healthy. Minimising stress can have a huge impact on treating leaky gut syndrome.

However, the most important step to take is eliminating problem causing, inflammatory foods from your diet. Another important step in the treatment of leaky gut syndrome is removing harmful bacteria. This can be done by eliminating certain foods from your diet, and taking small doses of natural supplements.

An inflammatory diet should be replaced with healthy, healing foods, which will be advised by one of our trained Integrative Health Practitioners. Next, you must introduce good bacteria to your diet to maintain healthy gut flora and repair the gut.
