CHIROPRACTIC CARE
CHIROPRACTOR PERTH
The chiropractors, pain and dysfunction practitioners, and team members at the Body Genius Institute see themselves as passionate leaders, educators, and mentors for all of their clients and for those who choose to follow them online.
They want to inspire individuals to do the things that inspire them! For some, this involves overcoming pain and dysfunction and returning to the activities they enjoy.
WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Chiropractic care is a discipline based on the scientific premise that the body is a self-regulating and self-healing organism. The important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body.
The nervous system can be classified as having two parts, the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), based on their locations in the body. The CNS includes the brain, brainstem, and the spinal cord, which is safely contained within the skull and vertebral column of the spine. All of the other nerves in the body are part of the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
Chiropractic specialists use a variety of techniques to adjust and manipulate the body to correct alignment, releasing pain and restoring correct function.
CHIROPRACTIC DEFINITION
Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine and pelvis) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how this relationship affects preservation and restoration of health.
The moving bones of the spine and pelvis protect the intricate communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If these nervous system pathways are impaired, then a malfunction of the tissue and organ/gland function throughout the body may result.
What type of condition may impair these nervous system pathways?
How can Chiropractic Care help you?
WHAT DO CHIROPRACTORS DO?
Chiropractors are often considered ‘the spinal health experts.’ They help to restore proper spinal biomechanics and improve nervous system function. In turn, this has a positive effect on the clients overall health and feeling of wellbeing.
Like physiotherapists and osteopaths, chiropractors are highly skilled at assessing the nervous system, skeletal system, muscular system, and vestibular system. This knowledge can then be applied to gain a better understanding of how the client moves and performs on a functional level.
All chiropractic providers are trained to order and evaluate radiological evidence such as x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans and ultrasounds. Combined with a keen understanding of healthy living and holistic healing, chiropractic care providers help to restore your body’s own innate ability to heal itself.
The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate and help reduce interferences with your body (primarily within the skull, spine and pelvis) to allow a healthier state of being.
WHAT CAN CHIROPRACTORS TREAT?
Chiropractic services treat a variety of pain and dysfunction issues in the body. Patients often come to us with the following issues, which can be treated with chiropractic care:
- Neck pain
- Headaches/migraines
- Back pain/strains

The Body Genius Institute has taken the unique step of creating an internal grading system for its Pain and Dysfunction practitioners. There are several key reasons why this initiative was taken:
- To provide a structured career path that is in the best interests of the practitioner, the clients, and the Body Genius Institute
- To map out the practitioner journey with respects to ongoing education and its application to enhance client outcomes.
- To allow clients to gain a precise understanding of the competency of each Body Genius practitioner. Clients can have the confidence that the higher the practitioners grading, the greater their skill set and experience, and the greater is their ability to handle complex issues.
- As a form of internal ‘triage’ that allows BG practitioners to handle clients that are appropriate for their skill set and experience. More complex clients will be booked to see more experienced practitioners (higher grading). If a BG practitioner is not making consistent progress with a client they can refer that client to a practitioner with a higher grading for further evaluation.
- BG practitioners with higher grading charge a higher value per consultation. More experienced practitioners will consult fewer hours per week allowing them more time and energy to focus on more complex cases. This is of benefit to the client, the practitioner, and the Body Genius Institute.
This simple concept has been demonstrated to significantly enhance clinical outcomes by consistently achieving the clients’ “Good Outcome.”
- Clients with pain or dysfunction that are deemed to be ‘straight-forward’ can be moved from a more experienced practitioner to a practitioner with a lower grading. This will save the client a significant amount of money.

BODY GENIUS CHIROPRACTIC TECHNIQUES
There are specials skills chiropractors bring to the Body Genius Institute. These have been incorporated into the Body Genius practitioner training system and the Body Genius Method.
- A holistic mindset of health care including the understanding that lifestyle factors such as sleep, exercise, whole food eating, stress levels, and happiness play a significant role in the healing process.
- Graston Technique – This is an instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enable clinicians to detect and effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions, in addition to maintaining an optimal range of motion.
- Activator Method – This is a diagnostic and treatment system used by some chiropractors to treat back pain, neck pain and headaches. A small, hand-held instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument is used to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra or joint. It’s often used as an alternative to the traditional manual form of spinal manipulation.
- Advanced skills in manipulation of the peripheral joints (feet, hands, ankles, wrists, knees, elbows, hips, shoulders)
- Advanced skills in manipulation of the cervical (neck), thoracic (middle back) and lumbar (lower back)
- Advanced skills in manipulation and mobilization of the sacroiliac joint and realigning the pelvis.
- CranioSacral Therapy
- A keen understanding of clinical neuroscience
- Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) have the ability to order and interpret advanced imaging (x-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, CT)
- A keen understanding of sports – Advanced Sports Chiropractic degree
Do you really know your level of pain & dysfunction?
Take Pain & Dysfunction Questionnaire now!
Several key concepts are indicative of all BG ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ practitioners, regardless of their professional status – Chiropractor, Physiotherapist, Osteopath.
All of our BG ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ practitioners consult at the ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ level of the Performance Pyramid.
The figure above represents the organ/gland symptom referral patterns of the body. As you can see, when organs are unhealthy, inflamed, or not functioning properly on a physiological level, they can communicate this to us by creating specific symptoms.
We may perceive this organ message as nerve-like pain, headaches, migraines, muscular tightness/pain or even joint pain. When this occurs, it would be inappropriate for our ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ practitioners to treat you. As such you may be referred to our Integrative Health Practitioners (IHP) to assess you on a deeper level.
Once you have booked a consultation with a pain and dysfunction practitioner, you will receive a ‘Welcome Email’ that includes a section related to your current and previous health history. The main reason for obtaining this information from you is so that our practitioners can evaluate your overall health status and ensure that the cause of your problem is neuro-musculoskeletal in nature and that your body’s ability to heal is not being limited by poor health status.
A healthy body heals faster!
Is your ‘pain generator’ from a source that our pain and dysfunction practitioners can influence? The last thing we want to do is chase symptoms around your body and avoid the true cause of the problem.
Possible Neuro-Musculoskeletal Pain Generators | ||
---|---|---|
Central nervous system | Nerve roots | Peripheral nerves |
Spinal discs | Joint cartilage | Ligaments |
Tendons | Muscles | Fascia |
Joints | Scar tissue | Diaphragm |
Through the nervous system and endocrine (hormonal) system, all of the systems of the body can communicate with each other. The old adage, ‘everything in the body is connected’ certainly holds true!
All of our BG ‘Pain and Dysfunction’ practitioners consult in accordance with The Body Genius Method.
The Body Genius Method
The first step in the process is for our practitioners to evaluate your ‘Intake Forms’ to gain a better understanding of why you would like to see us, what your ‘Good Outcome’ is, to evaluate your health status, and to have the opportunity to ask further questions if needed.
The next step is a comprehensive, full body assessment of your nerves, muscles, joints and other soft tissues. This information allows us to create a summary table highlighting your specific challenges and is used to establish the treatment plan.
Treatment by our practitioners will be aimed specifically at improving movement at specific joints within your body. We use the term ‘dysfunction’ to represent lack of movement at one or more joints within the body.
Hip Flexion | Neck Rotation | Lower back bending |
By increasing movement within your body, our practitioners can be confident that they are applying the right treatments and having a positive affect in your brain and on your body. Once all of your movement patterns have been restored and you’re pain-free you will be deemed as ‘clinically clear.’
Clinically Clear = Pain and Dysfunction Free
Decades of clinical experience have allowed us to determine that clinically clear and functionally clear are not the same thing.
For example, a client may demonstrate normal ankle, knee, hip, back, neck and shoulder movement by the end of their treatment plan, and yet not be able to perform an overhead squat or lunge test. It’s for this reason that clinically clear is not enough. We must progress to the next stage of the BG Method – Functional Risk Assessment.
Clinically Clear ≠ Functionally Clear
The functional risk assessment is a detailed movement analysis that leads to a risk profile being created. In other words, how likely are you to sustain an injury if you return to sport or activity? It’s through proper testing that our practitioners are able to pick up on movement faults that may be predispose you to injury or pain.
This type of functional testing is objective (measureable) and can be used to reflect ‘true’ progress in a return to sport or activity program. With this information, our practitioners can provide precise corrective exercises that will improve your movement patterns and lower your injury risk.
With the stresses and strains of the modern world, your body will require regular ‘tune-ups’ to keep it functioning at its best and symptom free.
Your practitioner will therefore recommend that you have regular check-ups at defined intervals throughout the year. Clients with more demanding jobs, lifestyles or activities/sport will likely need to be seen more frequently.
A NEW HEALTH CARE MODEL (HOLISTIC HEALING)
Our chiropractic treatment is part of a new health care model that is client focused and holistic in nature. To overcome pain & dysfunction each individual needs to take responsibility for their own health and wellness and make decisions that reflect their desire to be healthy and happy.
Foundation Principles of Health
Organic food
Active lifestyle
Emotional health
Filtered water
Mental health
Optimal breathing patterns
Quality sleep patterns
Spiritual health
This new Holistic model of health care will allow clients to surround themselves with a team of health professionals that is most suited to their needs. (Chiropractor, medical doctor, physiotherapist, traditional Chinese medicine, osteopath, integrative health practitioner)
These concepts become especially powerful when put into context in relation to human performance. A client’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health must make up the foundation for any performance model.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Like all of our pain and dysfunction practitioners, our chiropractor will follow the Body Genius Method outlined above. There are several key reasons that our practitioners are so successful.
First, they follow a precise system of analysis and treatment that has consistently provided outstanding results for our clients.
Second, they take a holistic approach to healthcare and recognize the body as a ‘whole’. Addressing the whole person may require lifestyle changes in order to have a positive affect on mental, spiritual, emotional and physical health.
Third, treatment is focused on improving functional movement patterns and not simply reducing pain. This point is very important because it ensures our practitioners do not chase symptoms around your body.
Symptoms can be very misleading as to the true cause of your problem. The specific treatment techniques the use will be dependent upon their clinical findings and what structures of the body are contributing to your neck pain. They may choose to use dry needling, mobilization, manipulation, active releasing techniques or CranioSacral therapy. It really depends on how you present.
Lastly, our practitioners will complete the process by performing a functional risk profile. This critical step ensures you can return to sport or activity with the confidence that your risk of re-injury is as low as possible.
This is a question we get asked all the time.
Numerous studies have been done to evaluate the efficacy, safety, appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of chiropractic treatment.
When an adjustment is performed there will often be an audible ‘pop’ which is called a cavitation and it’s the release of gas. But certainly, there is no bone-crunching that occurs and no risk to the joints or bones.
For more read our blog “Are Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments Safe?”
If you have taken the time to read the preceding information then you will know that there are many reasons why spending time with our chiropractor will be a much different experience.
First, Body Genius has chosen to call all of our chiropractors, physiotherapists, and osteopaths, “Pain and Dysfunction Practitioners”. Each practitioner follows the Body Genius Method when consulting with clients and uses their skills, knowledge and experience to help the client achieve their ‘good outcome.’
Second, all of our “pain and dysfunction’ practitioners have a wide range of skills in addition to manipulation: Acupuncture, dry needling, neuro-corrective exercise, massage therapy, active releasing techniques, CranioSacral therapy and more.
Lastly, all of our practitioners perform 30-minute initial assessments and 15 to 30-minute follow-up sessions. Each client is unique and the time needed to complete the Body Genius Method is different for everyone. However, you will spend at least 15 minutes during each consultation and more often 20 to 30-minutes.
It’s amazing that this perception of chiropractors still persists since it began in the 1930s.
The now famous “Wilk versus American Medical Association” case, was a federal antitrust lawsuit brought against the American Medical Association (AMA) by Chester A. Wilk. It resulted in a ruling against the AMA. During the proceedings it was shown that the AMA had attempted to:
- Undermine Chiropractic schools
- Undercut insurance programs for chiropractic patients
- Conceal evidence of the effectiveness of chiropractic care
- Subvert government inquiries into the effectiveness of chiropractic
- Promote other activities that would control the monopoly the AMA had on health care
This decision was upheld by the 7th United States Circuit Court of Appeals in 1990.
So as you can see, a great deal of this misinformation and slandering has been disseminated by the medical association in an attempt to secure more business. And yet very few people in the general public are aware that this practice is occurring.
It’s also worth reiterating that to become a registered chiropractor in Australia you must have studied an accredited 5-year chiropractic program conducted at a University within Australia, or have completed an accredited program overseas that satisfies the requirements set by the Australian Chiropractic Regulating authority.
And that chiropractors are required to adhere to strict and extensive ongoing educational requirements and are government regulated and accredited – Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
If your interested in the scientific research backing the chiropractic profession then it’s worth reading question two of ‘Frequently Asked Questions’. This Q & A addresses some of the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of chiropractic care and speaks to the successful outcomes that chiropractic care can achieve.
The term ‘bone crunchers’ is a derogatory term that was once again used to try and discredit the chiropractic profession. The term refers to the sound made during manipulation of a joint. An audible ‘pop’ called a cavitation can be heard. But certainly there is no risk to the bones or soft tissues of the joint.
